The Basilica and guilt

I left the couple from Vancouver and headed toward St. Peters basilica.  The traffic is something to watch.  The people on their scooters are nuts.  There seems to be no laws on the streets of Rome.  I haven't seen anyone run over yet but it wouldn't surprise me if I did.

The area surrounding the basilica is immense.  You feel very small standing in front of it with statues of saints looking down at you.  With giant posters of Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, Padre Pio (he's very big around Rome and recently beautified or cannonized) staring into your eyes you'd think a person might be overcome by guilt.  The guilt from too many past sins and that person would drop to his knees right then and there and pray for his immortal soul.  Why did I do all of those horrible horrible (but really fun) things?  How could I live such an evil life?  Will I ever be forgiven?

Eventually you leave the Basilica, have some wine and pasta and forget all about those pesky sins.

  1. We're reading these comments aloud (I'm reading to Brett) for the first time, in reverse chronological order, so we can experience it as you did. This is the funniest, and most Shep-like, post yet :-)
We love that you went, and just got your postcard today; however, I must chastise you that you did not told us you were going, and apprise us of this blog so we could follow your shenanigans. You need to become a more savvy-friend traveler. PS, where are the pics??!
    Love you lots, J & B
